Backrooms Tag: Privacy Policy

What stays on your device
The game saves these in your headset's browser storage so they're there next time:
- your player name and fur color
- whether you turned voice chat on
- a random player ID. It is made up on your device, isn't linked to your Meta account, and is used so that blocking someone still works after you restart
- the list of players you've blocked
- your points, items, achievements, hats, entity index photos and game settings
Uninstalling the game or clearing its data deletes all of this.
What other players in your room receive
When you join a room with a code, the game connects you directly to the other players in that room (peer-to-peer, using WebRTC). They receive:
- your player name, fur color and random player ID
- where your head and hands are, so they can see your gorilla move
- whether you're the Entity or a survivor
- the hat you're wearing
- if voice chat is on: your microphone audio, live
- any text chat messages you type. They're shown to the players in your room for a short time, then disappear. They aren't stored or sent to us
Because the connection is direct, the other players' devices can also see your device's internet (IP) address. This is how peer-to-peer connections work. Only play in rooms with people you're comfortable with, and keep your room code private if you don't want strangers to join. The PUBLIC rooms are open to anyone, so strangers can join you there.
Microphone
The game only asks for your microphone when you turn voice chat on, in the menu or with the VOICE key on the terminal. Your voice is sent live to the players in your room. It is not recorded, stored or sent to us. You can mute yourself (left Y button in VR, or V on desktop) or turn voice chat off at any time.
Services the game uses
- Connecting players: to find the other players in a room, the game uses a free public matchmaking server run by the PeerJS project. That server sees your IP address and a temporary connection ID that contains the room code. If a direct connection between two players isn't possible, game data and voice can be relayed through PeerJS's relay servers.
- Loading the game: parts of the game's code (the three.js and PeerJS libraries) are downloaded from the jsDelivr content network. Like any website, it sees your IP address when it sends the files.
- Website hosting: the game is served from Cloudflare, which keeps standard web server logs (such as IP addresses and the time of each request).
Reports
Every player on the board next to the terminal has a REPORT button. When you report someone, this is sent to us through Formspree, a form service that delivers it to our email:
- the reported player's name and random player ID
- your name and random player ID
- the room code, the names and player IDs of everyone in the room, and the time
We only use reports to deal with players who break the rules. We keep them for up to 12 months and then delete them. Reporting someone also blocks them on your device: you won't hear them, and their name is hidden for you.
Rules and enforcement
Be kind. No harassment, hate, sexual content, threats, or sharing personal information. Players must also follow Meta's Code of Conduct for Virtual Experiences. Reports are reviewed by us, the developer of Backrooms Tag, not by Meta. If we take action against a player, it will be because of a report we reviewed. If you think we've made a mistake, email us at the address below and we'll look again.
Children
Backrooms Tag is meant for players aged 13 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us information through a report, contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices
- Play solo by leaving the room code empty. Then nothing is shared with anyone.
- Leave voice chat off, or mute yourself.
- Change your name at any time using the terminal.
- Ask us to delete any report that mentions you by emailing us with your player name and the room code.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
